    The Songbirds

The passerines are the largest order of the class of birds. The taxon includes in fact more than half of the bird species. Birds of this order are generically referred to as passerines, but are also often referred to as songbirds after their name "songbirds" by English speakers. Many passerines are songbirds that have complex muscles to control their syrinx; all open their beaks to get food in the nest. They have four fingers, three forward and a backward (the thumb). They are therefore anisodactyles. Most passerines are size smaller than birds of other orders.
