    Eurasian Spoonbill

    Scientific name : Platalea leucorodia

    Family : Threskiornithidae

Leng. 70 to 95 cm, Wing. 115 to 135 cm

The Eurasian Spoonbill is a wading bird with long beak-like tip that allows it to stir the pot and eat plankton. With a length of 88 cm and a wingspan of 130 cm, this species frequents open aquatic environments such as shallow lagoons and reedbeds. It nests in colonies in the reeds, sometimes in trees or shrubs. It is uncommon outside the shores of the Channel and the Atlantic, but can sometimes be seen in the south of France, Camargue in particular. Unlike herons and egrets, Spoonbill flies with outstretched necks, like the Flamingos.
This species is on the red list in terms of its conservation in France, the Spoonbill has thus a full protection on French territory since the Ministerial Decree of 17 April 1981 relating to protected birds on the entire territory.
