Roads of Santiago de CompostelaOpen or Close
The pilgrimage of Santiago de Compostela contains four big historic roads leading to Santiago de Compostella, who meet, in one single to Puente Reina, on Spanish territory:
- The voice of Vézelay - crossing Sainte-Marie-Madeleine de Vezelay, St. Leonard in Limousin and the city of Perigueux;
- The voice of Tours - which crosses by St.Martin of Tours, Saint-Hilaire of Poitiers, Saint Jean d' Angély, Saint-Eutrope de Saintes and the city of Bordeaux.
- The voice of Puy en Velay - which starts from Notre Dame du Puy, Sainte-Foy in Conques and Saint-Pierre de Moissac;
- The voice of Arles - passing through Saint-Gilles du Gard, city of Montpellier, city of Toulouse and the Somport pass.
The voice of Le Puy en Velay (situated in Auvergne) is the most frequented today. his charm comes from a lot of the beauty of its route, the architectural treasures which mark out her way, but also of the existence of a strong infrastructure of welcome and accommodation.
On the way, we find many lodges and the other very diverse formulae of welcome. This path is a hiking trail, the GR 65. He is marked out on all his length and is the object of a rich and well conceived documentation allowing to move without any trouble.
The Camino francés of Spain was registered on the UNESCO world heritage in 1993. The situation of France is not comparable to that of Spain. A file was presented to the UNESCO under the general title " The roads of Santiago de Compostela in France ", but only 71 buildings or architectural ensembles and 7 sections of the GR 65 were registered on December 5th, 1998.
The voice of Arles is also called voice "Tolosana" the voice of Toulouse. The Tolosane voice is now fully signposted: it is the GR 653.
